E number phobia
Lately it is very trendy to ‘be healthy’ .People are more and more concerned with what is actually in a Twix or Diet Coke. A Diet drink might contain less sugar, but the neighbour or Facebook say that in fact it is very unhealthy. To which extent are these sources right?
Quinoa, chia seeds and lemon waters have become indispensable in some households. People are very concerned with what is and what is not healthy, and think they are becoming more conscious of what they eat.
E numbers are preferably to be avoided, because they have been labelled as unhealthy in the last few years. The annoying thing however is, that nobody knows for sure whether it is really healthy or not. Are these infamous E numbers so unhealthy because your neighbour or somebody on FB says so? What actually are E numbers?
E numbers are additives without any nutritional value which are added to certain products to give them a certain flavour, colour or smell. They can be extracted either from plants or animals, or manufactured. Examples include flavour enhancers, colourants and preservatives.
Many soft drinks have plenty of E numbers. Would this deter the ‘concerned consumer’ from drinking soft drinks? Or would the consumer consume less soft drinks because of this? One thing is certain: E numbers such as aspartame are taboo and everyone is obviously getting more and more scared of them.
But despite the fact that they are portrayed so badly by certain researchers and the media, all does not seem to be that bad. E numbers would not have been called E numbers if they had not been approved by the European food safety authorities. These give a guarantee that the substances are safe and that there is not too much of one of these substances in the products. The fact is that the law specifies specifically which products may have additives added and how much is maximally allowed.
It really is not as bad as has been claimed by certain media, E numbers are safe and with a normal diet you will never ingest too many.
There is a lot of hype about the supposed negative effect of these E numbers and people are becoming more anxious by the day because of it. This is really not necessary, have your Diet Coke because with a normal diet you will never ingest too many E numbers.
