Positive effects of alcohol
Every day we hear how bad alcohol is for us. Once every so often we are slapped around the head with new facts about the effects of alcohol. It cannot be denied that alcohol entails a great number of negative effects for our health. In the short as well as the long term, alcohol can cause damage, ranging from damage to the oesophagus, heart and blood vessels, liver, brain and stomach.
What we would of course love to hear, but unfortunately do not hear enough, are the positive effects of alcohol on our health. Because they do exist. When consumed in moderation, there are benefits, physical as well as mental.
We start with red wine. This beverage already has a pretty good reputation in health terms. But do you know that daily consumption of one glass of red wine reduces the risk of cancer and strengthens your heart? And wine is not the only drink good for the heart. Research has shown that 31% of beer drinkers (and we are talking about beer drinkers who drink very moderately) have a lower risk of heart disease.
Perhaps the most amazing thing what came out of this research is that older people who regularly drink a little alcohol are a lot fitter. Older people who abstain from alcohol are in a poorer condition than those who occasionally drink , and because of this have more problems with activities such as walking and even dressing themselves.
All in all, it can be said for certain that there are not only negative effects associated to alcohol. Besides making you more relaxed, it may even be good for your body. Of course this is definitely not an excuse to start drinking a lot, because then it becomes counterproductive and the negative effects will outweigh the positive ones by far. But having four drinks a week is definitely recommended!
